Ophir is an historic gold mining town. It is a small, quaint village of older buildings and lovely cottage gardens in the spring & summer. It takes on a golden/orange hue in autumn and magical hoar frosts in winter.

There is a vintage shop / collectables shop on site (discuss with hosts re opening hours) and similar shops at Shingle Creek, Becks, Earnscleugh and Ranfurly.

Activities: Fishing, cycling (the Central Otago Rail Trail runs through Omakau 2 kms away).

Also the Alexandra to Lawrence cycle trail and a shorter riverside trail between Alexandra & Clyde. Also the Dunstan Trail – Clyde to Cromwell.

Check out the historic Daniel O’Connell Bridge at the Alexandra end of the village. Or, have a swim in the community pool in Ophir (honesty box for casual swimmers). Poolburn or Manorburn Dams are also a good trip for fishing (during their season), or a picnic.
